This Week In Grade 4

Hello everybody!  Thanks as always for checking in with us here at Discovery's grade 4 blog.  Here's what's on tap for our students this week:

CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES

Math:  This week in math lessons we will be learning how to tackle word based problems by following our process for problem solving.  We will then practice solving word problems and going through the process, step by step.  We will then review all of our number concepts that we learned in our first week,   including place values, writing numbers in expanded and word forms, and rounding numbers to the nearest thousand and ten thousand place.  There will be a short quiz on Thursday to assess how well our students understand these chapter one concepts.

Reading and Writing:  Our self-selected reading program is well underway.  Thank you parents for paying attention to what your children are reading at home, and asking questions as well.  Remember, each student will be responsible for at least 30 minutes of reading every night.  Our guided reading program is also up and running, as we have started reading our class novel, "Stone Fox".  This week's reading skill will be finding 'text-to-self' connections between ourselves and the story.  Writing periods will be focused on 'self selected writing' and responding to what we have read in our reading letters.

Social Studies:  Our 'maps and globes' unit continues.  We will adding the equator to our world maps, and discussing hemispheres, tropical regions, and national borders.  We will also be looking at the North American continent, and some of it's key facts and countries.

Spelling:  This week's spelling lesson will be focused on the long E sound.

Grammar:  We will be focused on identifying verbs and working on using them effectively in our writing.
