This Week in Grade 4 At Discovery

Hello everybody, thanks for checking in with us.  Thanks to all the parents who came to school last Wednesday for our Thanksgiving celebration.  The students had a great time putting on their play, and it was a nice to get a chance to enjoy a Thanksgiving lunch with our grade 4 family.  A special thanks to all the parents that helped organize our delicious lunch!  Enjoy the pictures!

IMPORTANT REMINDERS:

Early Release Day:  This Wednesday is a professional development day for the Discovery School teachers.  That means Wednesday will be an early release day.

Christmas Baskets For Our Support Staff:  As our tradition, Discovery School will be putting together Christmas gift baskets for our school's support staff.  Grade 4 is being asked to contribute either boxes of pasta/spaghetti or a bag of coffee.  Thank you for helping make the holiday season a bit brighter for our hardworking support staff.

Songfest:  Discovery's annual songfest celebration is coming.  The music department has asked for parents to help with the grade 4 costume.   All students are asked to wear blue jeans, a black shirt, and a  black cap, and to bring a broomstick.  The students will need their costumes for Thursday, Dec. 13th for their first dress rehearsal.

THIS WEEK'S ACTIVITIES:

Math:  We will be turning our focus back to division this week.  We will start with dividing multiples of 10 and 100 mentally, then move to estimating quotients, before moving into dividing with remainders and with 2 digit quotients.

Reading and Writing:   We will be studying key plot elements in narrative writing this week.  We will analyze the typical framework of most stories, and especially the class novels that we've read together.  We will then apply this knowledge to planning and drafting our own narratives in our writing periods.

Social Studies:  This will be the last week of our social studies unit.  The students will finish summarizing the key information from our Immigration booklet.  The students will then prepare for their summative assessment.  This assessment will be an oral language activity where the students will create an argument from the perspective of someone involved in the immigration process.  Through this activity students will need to demonstrate their understanding of the key concepts from the unit.

Grammar:  This week's focus will be on subject and verb agreements.

Here's to another great week at Discovery!  Thanks again for checking in.

All the best,

Jordan and Karen
