This Week At Discovery School

Hello everybody!  We hope you had a fun and relaxing long weekend.  Thanks again to the parents who helped out with our fun-filled Valentine's Day party last Thursday.  It was definitely a fun time.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS:

Photo Day:  Grade 4 photo day will next Tuesday, February 26th.  Start planning those outfits and hair styles!

THIS WEEK'S ACTIVITIES:

Math:  We start the week by reviewing our fraction concepts, and our ability to compare and order fractions.  We will then turn our attention to learning about mixed numbers and improper fractions, and how to convert them, compare them and order them.  By the end of the week we should be ready for fraction circle graphs.

Reading and Writing:  Our poetry unit was delayed last week, but we are now ready to dive head first into free verse poetry this week.  We will be learning about the key features of free verse poetry, and the author's purpose for writing this style of prose.  We will then experiment with creating our own free verse poems.  We will also be reading a story entitled, 'Sweet Clara's Freedom Quilt' that links in with our new social studies unit, 'Slavery in America'.

Social Studies:  We will be learning more about some of the conditions that slaves lived under during the time of slavery.  We will also be studying the reasons why the slave trade came to be, and some of the reasons why the Northern and Southern American colonies developed different attitudes towards slavery.

Grammar:  Our grammar focus again this week will be on how to avoid the use of double negatives in our writing.

Here's to a great week everybody!  Thanks for checking in!

Jordan and Karen
