This Week at Discovery

Hello everybody!  Thanks for checking in!  Here's to a fun-filled 4 day week in grade 4!

THIS WEEK'S CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES:

Math:  In math lessons this week we will continue to explore fraction concepts.  We will be working finding equivalent frations, comparing and ordering fractions, and on reducing fractions to their simplest form by finding common denominators.

Reading: This week's reading skill will be 'author's purpose'.  We will discuss the main motives that author's have for writing, (to explain, to persuade, to entertain).  We will look at different text samples and identify the purpose for writng, and explain how we know.  We will also begin to read some examples of classic free-verse poetry and discuss what the key features of a good free verse poem are.

Writing:  We will practice 'writing to explain' in an assignment designed to focus on the student's ability to clearly write out the steps in a process in order to explain a daily task to someone who is new to Earth and knows nothing about the things we do here.

Social Studies:  We will begin our new social studies unit on 'Slavery In America'.  We start by reading a story about the life of famous abolitionist and creator of the Underground Railroad, Harriet Tubman.  We will then look at an overview of Slavery in America and learn about how this terrible practice came to be.

Grammar:  This week's grammar focus will be on double negatives.  So don't not do a good job on your homework!

Thanks again for checking in!!  All the best!!

Jordan and Karen
