This Week in Grade 4

Hello everyone!  Thanks for checking in with us at our Grade 4 blogspot!

IMPORTANT REMINDERS:

Honduran Independence Day Celebration.  This Thursday will be our Honduran breakfast and Independence Day Celebration here at Discovery.  We will be having a Catracho style breakfast in our classroom from 8:50-9:45.  The celebration will then take place in the gym, beginning at 10:00.  Students will be released at 11:45.  All parents are welcome to join us for breakfast and the celebration.

Nutrition Talk.  Ms. Erika Corletto is organizing a Nutrition Talk for our Discovery School parents, sponsored by Pediasure. This talk will be offered by Eda Flefil, a nutritionist that will be talking about the benefits of  a well balanced diet. Please join us on Friday, September 21 at 2:30 p.m. in our school library.

THIS WEEK'S ACTIVITIES:

Math:  In math this week we will be reviewing our addition and subtraction skills.  We are all hoping to improve our mental adding and subtracting enough to make the 3 minute club.  We will then shift gears into looking at patterns and solving problems that require us to find a pattern.  Finally we will begin introducing algebraic concepts by writing expressions that match simple addition and subtraction equations.

Reading and Writing:  We have finished reading our class novel 'Stone Fox'.  Our follow up activity requires the students to plan and write an additional chapter in the book.  They will be able to write a chapter that directly follows the end of the story, or one that happens ten years in the future.  For this activity we will be working on planning our writing, avoiding run-on sentences, using quotations, and editing.

Science:  Now that we have finished our first social studies unit, it's on to science.  Our first unit is entitled 'Land and Water'.  Our students will be considering everything they know and would like to know about land and water and how they work together.  We will also be looking this week at the water cycle.

Spelling:  This week's spelling focus is on words with the long I sound.

Here's to a great and short week everybody!  We hope to see all of you this Thursday for Independence Day celebrations.  All the best,

Jordan and Karen
