This Week at Discovery

Greetings everybody!  Thanks for checking with our grade 4 blog.  We hope everyone who came out to UN Day last Thursday had a great time.  As usual, our students enjoyed taking a trip around the world, and learning more about some of the great nations that are represented here at Discovery School.      Thanks also to all the parents and students for coming in a timely manner for our parent/teacher/student conferences on Friday.  Parents, please don't forget to sign your report card envelopes and send them back with your son or daughter.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS:

Book Character Day is this Wednesday, Oct. 31st.  Students are encouraged to come dressed as one of their favourite characters from a book they've read.  If there are any questions regarding costumes for the day, please contact Jordan or Karen.

Bake Sale on Tuesday.  The High School students will be putting on a bake sale this Tuesday.

This Wednesday will also be an early release day, as our Discovery Students have a professional development afternoon.

THIS WEEK'S CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES:

Math:  At the start of the week we will practice multiplying three digit by one-digit numbers.  We will then work on a new problem solving strategy: Guess and Check, before getting back to multiplying money and multiplying with three factors.  It should be a busy week!

Reading and Writing:  We will continue working on the important reading skill of summarizing this week.  Our students will practice creating short, accurate summaries of everything that they read this week, from 'James and the Giant Peach', to non-fiction texts, to their SSR books.

Social Studies:  Our new social studies unit, 'Immigration in America' is underway.  This week we will be learning about some of the roots of immigration in America, and what it might have been like for early European immigrants to the Americas.  To do so we will be reading an informational text on the subject, and introducing our class play, 'First Stop Ellis Island'.  We will also be learning a song that details the immigrant experience entitled, 'Younger Brother', by Freeman Dre and the Kitchen Party.

Grammar:  Our grammar focus this week will be on Pronouns and reviewing the rules of capitalization in the English language.

Here's to another great week at Discovery!!  Thanks as always for checking in.

All the best,

Jordan and Karen
